Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu (1872)

This short novel by Sheridan le Fanu predates Dracula by 25 years and is one of the very first vampire novel as well as the very first female vampire, first published in 1872. This is a very important book in historic sense and in the genre of vampire novels.

Its a story about a teenage girl, Laura, lives with her father in a castle in Styria.

Laura Starts to get visions of a beautiful and mysterious visitor in her bedchamber at the age of 6.

12 years later, A carriage accident outside Laura's home brings a girl named Carmilla into their lives. Carmilla's "mother" Just leaves her in their care until she comes back for her.
During her stay with Laura they come to tell each other how they both recognize each other from the "dream" they both had when they were young .

The two girls grows to be close friends, however Carmilla's mood changes suddenly. She sometimes makes romantic advances towards Laura. Carmilla refuses to tell anything about herself, despite questioning by Laura. Her secrecy is not the only mysterious thing about Carmilla; she never joins the household in its prayers, she sleeps much of the day, and she seems to sleepwalk outside at night.

Meanwhile a sudden sickness spreads through the nearby towns and young girls began dying.

I liked it for the most part - Gothic castle in Styria, mix of authentic vampire folklore.

My Rating: ★★★☆☆
