"How sad it is! I shall grow old, and horrible, and dreadful. But this picture will remain always young. It will never be older than this particular day of June…. If it were only the other way! If it were I who was to be always young, and the picture that was to grow old! For that—for that—I would give everything! Yes, there is nothing in the whole world I would not give! I would give my soul for that!"
It's a tale of a young man who is convinced that a worthwhile life is spent pursuing beauty and pleasure. Basil is an artist who offers Dorian Grey to make a portrait of him because basil is obsessed by his beauty. While Dorian stays young and youthful his portrait alters with aging and also with every crime and sin he commits.
I love how eloquently the story is written about shallowness, cruelty, selfishness and hypocrisy. It's a dark tale despite not having too much supernatural elements in the novel. A person is no less of a monster that should be feared than any supernatural being.
My Rating: ★★★★☆
